I speak mostly Cantonese and English, while not good at Mandarin. My real name is 李振藩。藩 is a complex word, that no one uses, which can be understood as foreigners to many Chinese as an instinct. meaning 1 beating invading foreigners 2 let foreigners thrive. So, throughout my life, I have been wondering which meaning is the true meaning of my name. The two meanings contradict each other, and this puzzles me. While 李小龍 is my widely known name. Under my name’s influence, I have picked up fights when I was little, without the capability of differentiating right or wrong. so I fought some fights. In order to win more fights, I became Yip Man’s student. Within a short period of time, my father found out. He spoke to me, “You are not allowed to study martial art from Ip Man. Your fights damage our family’s reputation. Promise me, that you do not study martial arts. Promise me that you do not fight fights” Then, I made my promise. I went to Master Yip Man’s place. I told him, “Yip Man master, I promised my dad not to fight and not to study martial arts, so this lesson is the last lesson between you and me. Can you please teach me the advanced techniques of Wing Chun?” Yip Man said, “Give me 10 minutes, and I will teach you the technique.” 10 minutes later, Yip Man master taught me 日字衝拳。 Later, Yip Man said, “Let’s take a picture.” and us took a photograph showing 橋手 in Wing Chun. I did not come here to befriend with you, but instead, I came here to challenge you, challenge your Wingchun boxing.” I was shocked, “Why?” I asked. He then said, “You had beaten me back then, when we were both little. Since then, I wanted to defeat you for my revenge. I heard you study wingchun, so I learned western boxing to use it to challenge you” I then said, “Do you still want to fight me?” He paused and said, “No, I have changed my mind. You and I are now friends after this meal. Friends do not fight each other with hatred. I will tell others that my boxing lost to you today. Also, by the way, if I have boxing games or competition, you are welcome to come watch and cheer for me.” Since then, I went to watch him practice western boxing and his games, so I know some boxing techniques. In fact, he has become a friend of mine.

My parents used to entitle me, the “Philosopher.”, and they always say, son you look like you have always been thinking about something. For years, they have been saying this. Finally one day, “Hey son, what have you been pondering or thinking?” My dad asked. “I want to know the meaning of my name,” I replied. My dad responded, “You can check them in dictionaries.” Few months later, “Hey son, sorry, that I cannot be with you celebrating your birthday. Throughout my life, my academic performance is not top within my classes. So people’s impressions on me are 1 my father’s son 2. combat ability 3. drama. One day one of my classmates, asked, “Are you smart or are you stupid?” Then I replied, “I have heard of 方世玉，洪熙官，黃飛鴻，霍元甲 those historical figures, have you?” Then since then, I have occasionally told them martial arts stories to them, which I have read since Yip Man told me about 五枚師太 and 嚴詠春。One story after another, the more they listened to my stories. the more they admired me. I became fascinated by its culture. I said. After time has quickly passed, I went to Washington University in Seattle for College. After I entered Washington University, it wanted me to choose a major. They asked, “Bruce, you need to choose a major, and you get 10 minutes for answering that question.” I then replied Humanity (人文).” “oh, why humanity?” he asked. “Because, because (pause), I am a human, so I need to study humanity.” I replied. After I checked my name Bruce (不思) in dictionaries, I found 2 idioms with 不思 in them. They are called 1. 樂不思蜀 and 2. 不思進取。 樂不思蜀 means Too happy with playing without interest in return. 不思進取 means either working hard or not working at all. So from these 2 meanings, my philosophy is derived, which is == Play Hard, Work Hard. So the 1st meaning of Bruce, 不思 is 樂不思蜀, which is playing with joy without interest in return. In reality, I did not have that much interest in playing; therefore, I interpreted it as romance or relationship. I befriended a girl called Linda, a white, so I do not miss Hong Kong, I put effort into this romantic relationship with her. The 2nd meaning of Bruce, 不思， is 不思進取 means either working hard or not working at all, and I chose working hard as striving for advancement in achievement or higher position. Therefore, I took classes more than that the university required me, such as psychology, literature, drama, and philosophy. One day, for 進取, advancement, I asked my professor, “What is a difference between a master and a student?” “A master created his or her theory from existed ones while students are merely followers who study masters’ work,” my professor replied. “So Bruce, if you want to be a master, you need to create your own theory from your hobby, reading, or elsewhere.” After this lecture, I tried to develop or create my own theory from my reading and Taichi or Taijiquan. I became frustrated during the process, so I made a phone call to my dad asking if there is a philosophy behind Taichi or Taijiquan. My dad said that the founder of Tao religious branch or philosophy, Laozi, wrote a good book called Taote Jing, and you can read it. Few weeks later, I made another phone call to my dad. “Dad, TaoteJing is a good book.” “See I told you,” my dad said. I then said, “But it is too thick. Can you give me a short philosophical saying?” “Son, I will give you an old saying, 仁者樂山，智者樂水, meaning ethical people like mountains, and wise people like water.” “Than you dad.” “No problem, son.” So how did I come up with my own theories from that old saying? I changed “like” to “is like”, That made my life easy. so “like mountain and like water” become “is like mountain, and is like water”.Then, I wrote my theory: “Be formless, shapeless, like water. When you put water into a bottle, it becomes bottle. When you put it into a teapot, it becomes teapot. Water can flow, and it can crash. Be water, my friend.” I then use colors to represent mountain and water. Green represents mountain, and blue represents water. I made a theory called, Although green is from blue, green is superior to blue; in other words, I meant me as a green has become better than my teachers. (青出於藍，更勝於藍。) Many years later, green and blue have become Jedi’s light saber colors. One day, my older brother came to America to live with me. My older brother told me that he wanted to open a Wushu school business. He could not come up with a name for the school, so we agreed that the school’s name uses my Chinese name 振藩, so together, it is called 振藩武術館. One day, I had a dream, I was in this gym with Water pokemons, swimming in a swimming pool. In this scene, I could not move my character, and a character symbol came to me to start a conversation. “My name is Ash 小智, I came here to challenge you.” My conversation popped out “Me, Bruce Lee, the pokemon gym leader will accept your challenge.” Then Ash sent out his Pikachu, “Pika, Pika, Pikachu”, it Thunderbolted all three of my pokemons. I lost the battle, and Ash got his badge. Then, I woke up. For a period of time, we have had very few students. Weeks later, a Japanese named 木村武之, entered Bruce Lee’s school. Me and my older brother got excited, “We’ve got a new student.” “give me five.” “oh yeah.” We celebrated for few seconds. He spoke “I came here to challenge this school’s master.” I then conversed with my older brother, “The prophecy of the dream has come true.” “but he does not look like a yellow furry fuzzy pokemon.” “Are you prepared for this?” “Yes I will use Taote Jing to defeat him.” “Are you confident?” “Yes, I am.” We had a duel, and it was as the following: I got a challenge from a Karate and Judo master named 木村武之。He has always been a very tough opponent. Also, we made a deal, If I had won, I replaced him. If he had won, he replaced me. Then after the deal, we dueled, and the result is,..., that I lost. Therefore he replaced me as he promised, so he became the teacher, the assistant coach, of my dojo, or school. ha, ha ha.

One day, my teachers started to know the name of the school, was by Bruce Lee’s name, or my name. So they tried to persuade me to use another Chinese name, by saying 1. to avoid responsibility 2. to share and give credits to other teachers,...etc. So I name myself 四海，4 seas。After hearing it, my instructors changed 四海 to little Dragon 小龍。 Then, I got married, became a father of 2 children, 1 boy and 1 girl. I had my business going. Everything seemed fine. I seemed to become a little successful person. At then, My father, or my dad, passed away. In his final message, he wrote that in every Chinese New Year, he missed me, although he told me not to miss the past. He reserved a firecracker to want me, Bruce, to remember Chinese New Year culture. He also recorded a few conversation between us in writing. He also wrote, Bruce, you are allowed to practice martial arts, finally, because you are now a martial arts school president, you should work hard to be a qualified teacher. Months later, I went up national Karate torunement for demonstration as a special guest. First, I demoed a 2-finger push-ups as a finger technique from Shaolin. Second, I presented One-inch punch (It was a combination of memory flash back of My dad's words 分寸 and 日字衝拳 from Ip Man) One-inch punch demo. After I had demoed one-inch punch, I demoed a Ip Man's wing chun technique. My demonstration has attracted various audience, and it is a successful national demonstration. Also my students became proud of me, saying that me as a master who can do Kung-fu. During that time period, I befriend a Taekwondo master 李俊九。 I learned side kick from him. He learned Wingchun punch from me. We exhanged martial arts. In the coming 3 years, I practiced hard on Karate and Taekwondo. During these 3 years, I studied Karate with Daniel Arca Inosanto who later became my assistant coach.

After all his students came welcome me, I realized, master Yip man or Ip Man, does not have that many students. To promote martial arts, or to make it popular, I decided to shoot films in Hong Kong. Sorry, never get a chance to explain this. Bruce Lee's story is similar to the story of the movie 破壞之王，"love on Delivery". In the end, Bruce Lee died at the age of 32, with 4.5 movies filmed in Hong Kong.
